Here is what I did for moving my WordPress blog

Facts: Do not think that your images in your 1and1blog do take your filespace. Actually they do. The folders of these images are just hidden for you.

How to move your 1and1 Blog to your own Wordpress blog or blogger blog?

This website (http://blog.sharemsg.net) is the old blog of this website.

For blogger blog, you need to complete the steps for Wordpress blog first, use the "Manage"->"Export" to export the XML file to your computer. Upload this file to your server and then change your Blogger to point to that file.

This XML format, which we call WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR, will contain your posts, comments, custom fields, and categories.

Steps for Wordpress blog (subjects to change):

Step 1. Made sure the version that 1and1 blog offered is upgradeable to the version that you download from wordpress.org. That means you have to find out the version of your 1and1 Blog at the bottom of your admin page. Then download the installation files for the newest version and the version that your 1and1 Blog uses.

Step 2. Create a new Database with 1and1.com via 1and1 control panel. (check how at faq.1and1.com)

Step 3. Ask 1and1 technician to export your database of your 1and1 blog to a dump file (backup file of your 1and1blog DB.)

Step 4. Once you got the database dump file, upload the file to your protected filesystem and then try to dump them into the new database that you created for your new blog. To do that, I suggest to use PuTTy. Under the directory of your dump file,

Syntax: mysql -h db_host_name -u db_user_name -p db_name < db_dump_filename

Example: mysql -h db333.db333.com -u dbo3333333 -p db3333333 <>

Step 5. Use 1and1 phpAdmin to monitor your new database. You should see tables with prefix name:

blog_1_

If you have more than one 1and1Blog, then you have to note which one you want to install in your new WordPress blog. Mine was blog_2_

Then you have to change the wp-config-example.php to wp-config.php file in the WordPress installation files. Make sure the $table_prefix value is matching the prefix value we found "blog_1_" or "blog_digit_"

For example: $table_prefix = 'blog_1_';

Remove all tables from your new database.

Step 6. Upload and Install the WordPress with the order version that you downloaded (See WordPress Document.) Remove all tables again and Import the dump file to your new database.

Step 7. Create a sub-domain pointing to that directory with 1and1 for free.

Step 8. See the data in postmeta table with 1and1 phpAdmin. You will see where your impages are saved. Move the images to:

/__oneclick_uploads/ under your WordPress files (I suggest to use secureFx)

(actually the .oneclick is a hidden folder. you could cp (UNIX command for copy) it to a temporary folder and then you could use any FTP programs like secureFX to move the folder by drag and drop.)

My image files were in /homepages/33/d33333333/.oneclick/wordpress/2/__oneclick_uploads ( remember we just talked about the table prefix? because mine was "blog_2_". Move the images in that __oneclick_uploads to your new __oneclick_uploads under WordPress folder )

Then export postmeta table data to a sql file with 1and1 phpAdmin.

1and1 phpAdmin.JPG(I prefer not to click "drop table")

Replace the string of the old directory in the exported postmeta file with the string of the new directory using notepad (do not use Word Wrap function) or your favorite editor. Save it as a new file.

Once the postmeta table data is updated, delete the postmeta table, upload the file to your protected filesystem and dump the file to your database (see how to dump the file in step 4)

Step 9. Exported posts table data to a sql file with 1and1 phpAdmin, and change strings of

http://your_OLD_1andBlog_url/__oneclick_uploads/

to

http://your_new_BLog_url/__oneclick_uploads/

For example:

http://blog.sharemsg.net/__oneclick_uploads/
to http://www.sinoclip.com/blog/__oneclick_uploads/

For some reason, I encouter problem trying to dump new data for posts table after using notepad to change the strings. Then I tried changing the string in my protected directory using vi and then I imported the data successfully.

:g/blog.sharemsg.net/s//www.sinoclip.com\/blog/g

(You have to use \ before symbols. For this case, I put a \ before the / in this string "www.sinoclip.com/blog" )

Step 10. Now the blog is perfectly fine waiting for me to change its look by changing the css and template files.

Blogger Editor - Excellent Blog Editor

Love the Blogger Editor.

I am using the Editor here to format my website text (sinofay.com Skin Care ) and other blog site. I might want to start my blog here from the beginning. In Wordpress, it is too slow. I tried the Wordpress via 1and1blog (v.2_0_7 - major security issue) and an new instance of Wordpress (sinoclip.com/blog - v. 2_1_2 - imported my 1and1blog and upgraded by myself. I will post the instruction of how later) installed on my web server. Both of them are too slow during text editing and creating a blog. Loading an existing blog to edit is like waiting forever and sometimes the Hypertext Editor doesn't show and you have to refresh the page again. Here, I see no problem so far since I am just beginning to do it here and the other ones have like more than 130 posts.

Other good things about blogger is :

  • It save automatically as draft during your editing or creating.
  • Changing Templates, colors and the fonts is so easy.

But I am still observing before I completely dedicate myself to blogger since I haven't lost faith to WordPress (I could install any kind of plugins that I want and I have so many posts in those 2 sites. ) and I could create pages (plus the labels like blogger's) in WordPress.

My most concern is if I Can Import/Export my blogs easily. In Wordpress v. 2_1_2 for sure, you could import from NEW blogger or/and export the whole site easily. You cannot export your blog from 1and1Blog (WordPress v.1_0_9) easily, that is why I have to share the how to do with you later when I finish higher priority To_Do.
